What is the UCR?
The Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) can be another necessary part of starting your own trucking company. It’s an agreement among a number of states in the US used to support motor carrier safety. UCR filings are often collected for the next year starting October 1st.
The UCR is not mandated by the FMCSA, but if you’re operating in one of the states that is part of this agreement, you can expect to pay the fee, regardless of what your base state is. We can help you stay up-to-date on current UCR regulations.
Who Needs to File for the UCR?
If your trucking company is hauling interstate in a truck that has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,001 pounds, transports 10 or more passengers, or hauls hazardous materials that require placarding, you are required to file under the UCR.
All trucking companies hauling interstate are still subject to the UCR, even if their base state is not part of the agreement.
Freight brokers who help find loads for truckers in interstate commerce, are also required to file.
